El archipiélago de San Andrés y Providencia fue declarado por la Unesco, el 10 de noviembre del año 2000, como reserva mundial de la biosfera; lo conforman una serie de islas, islotes y cayos donde se conjuga una mezcla de cultura y biodiversidad de flora y fauna, haciendo del archipiélago un territorio de historias maravillosas de mestizaje que se traducen en una lengua propia, una cultura y costumbres muy características y hasta una gastronomía especial...
Algunos datos importantes para su conocimiento son:
LOCALIZACIÓN: Está situado a 720 Km. al Noroeste de la costa colombiana. COORDENADAS EXTREMAS: 12° 00’ y 16° 30’ de latitud N y los 78° 00’ y 82° 00’ de longitud O. ALTURA: San Andrés: 2 MSNM - Providencia: 12 MSNM EXTENSIÓN: 44 Km2, de los cuales 26 Km2. corresponden a la isla de San Andrés; 17 Km2 a la isla de Providencia y los restantes a la isla de Santa Catalina; los Islotes Bolívar, Alburquerque, Cotton Haynes; los cayos Grunt, Jhony Rose, Easycay, Roncador, Serrana, Serranilla, Quitasueño, Brothers, Rocky, Crac, Santander, y los bancos Alicia y Bajo Nuevo.
EXTENSION AGUAS TERRITORIALES: 349.800Km2 TEMPERATURA PROMEDIO: 28º C CAPITAL: San Andrés HABITANTES: 73.465 (año 2.000), de los cuales 5.000 habitan la isla de Providencia y Santa Catalina ECONOMIA: Turismo y comercio principalmente. Pesca, agricultura y ganadería como medio de subsistencia.
ALGO DE HISTORIA Y FECHAS: El archipiélago de San Andrés y Providencia tiene una historia plagada de leyendas de piratas y tesoros; y no es para menos, pues ha sido protagonista de innumerables invasiones y disputas por su tenencia y soberanía.
Algunos historiadores afirman que este archipiélago fue descubierto por Cristóbal Colon en su primer viaje (1492), cuando se dirigía de Jamaica a Costa Rica; el las llamó “Jardín de la Reina” en honor a Isabel, reina de España. Sin embargo, fue solo hasta 1510, cuando España toma posesión de esas islas.
En 1538 son adjudicadas a la audiencia de Panamá y en 1544 son transferidas a la capitanía de Guatemala y Nicaragua.
Hacia 1663 llegaron los primeros esclavos negros para trabajar en las plantaciones de tabaco y algodón los cuales dan origen a gran parte de la población actual.
Durante el siglo XVI, piratas como Francis Drake recorrieron el archipiélago; pero fue el pirata Henry Morgan quien en 1670 lo ocupó por 19 años durante los cuales atacó a Panamá y saqueó a Santa Marta.
Hasta 1803 las islas fueron tomadas en diferentes ocasiones por piratas ingleses y holandeses; siendo recuperadas siempre por España; aunque los cambios de dominio no se dieron siempre al mismo tiempo, dado que las islas tuvieron historias separadas en diferentes épocas.
La rapiña terminó en 1793 con la firma del Tratado de Versalles por el cual Inglaterra reconoció a España la soberanía sobre el Archipiélago.
Después de la guerra de independencia en 1819 y con la Constitución Política de 1821, se declara “cantón” al Archipiélago de San Andrés, bajo la jurisdicción del estado de Cartagena; izándose por primera vez la bandera colombiana en 1822.
No obstante lo anterior, el Archipiélago no fue muy tenido en cuenta, durante los primeros 140 años de la República, esta es una de las razones por las cuales su cultura, costumbres y religión, no hayan sido de las mismas características de las continentales.
En 1912, el Archipiélago de San Andrés y Providencia es elevado a la categoría de intendencia y el 4 de julio de 1991 se convierte en departamento.
TOPOGRAFIA:
SAN ANDRÉS: La isla de San Andrés es de origen coralino; está rodeada por una barrera de arrecifes y cubierta por bosques de cocoteros, con una elevación de 55. metros que se extiende de Norte a Sur. La formación Coralina de San Andrés y en especial la barrera de arrecifes que la bordean dan a su mar una variedad de colores de belleza inigualable.
PROVIDENCIA:
Las islas de Providencia, es de origen volcánico, montañosa y posee fuentes naturales de agua, de lo cual se deriva su vocación agrícola y ganadera.
SANTA CATALINA:
Santa Catalina es una isla boscosa, con no mas de 1 Km2 de extensión; sus tierras son propicias para la ganadería y el cultivo de frutales y palmas de coco.
ATRACTIVOS TURÍSTICOS:
El Archipiélago de San Andrés recibe aproximadamente 350.000 turistas al año de los cuales el 15% son extranjeros; por ello buena parte del sustento de sus habitantes depende del turismo.
En la isla de San Andrés se destacan:
Playa de San Luís: Extensa playa donde la tranquilidad, la brisa y el sonido de las olas son elemento predominante; ideal para aquellos turistas que quieren estar alejados del ruido de la ciudad. Allí predominan las casas construidas en madera y arquitectura caribeña.
El Cove: En esta bahía fondean los buques de la Armada Nacional y los cruceros que recorren el Caribe. Allí se puede practicar el buceo y degustar la comida típica en algunos restaurantes informales.
El Hoyo Soplador: Consiste en un fenómeno natural producto de un túnel subterráneo que comienza en los arrecifes y termina en un hoyo, que cuando la marea sube y las olas entran con fuerza, lanza un chorro de agua semejante a un géiser.
La Cueva de Morgan: Esta formación coralina a la cual el mar dio forma de cueva, guarda una leyenda según la cual el pirata Henry Morgan, escondió un valioso tesoro en su interior; tesoro que hasta la fecha no ha sido encontrado; dándole así a dicha leyenda un ingrediente de misterio y magia.
La Playa de Spratt Bight: Considerada la playa principal de la isla, con una extensión de 450 metros y una hermosa arena blanca; se convierte en el lugar preferido para disfrutar del sol y el mar. Allí se pueden tomar las lanchas para pasear alrededor de la isla o ir a la cercana isla de Johnny Cay o el acuario. Es sitio predilecto para deportes náuticos como el Sunfish, Katesurf y el Windsurf o el Ski y el Jet ski. A lo largo de esta playa se encuentra buena parte del complejo hotelero y comercial de la isla.
Barrio La Loma. Este barrio es habitado casi en su totalidad por nativos de la isla y uno de los sitios donde mejor se aprecia la arquitectura isleña tradicional. Se encuentra ubicado a 120 Mts de altura; lo cual permite apreciar la isla en su magnitud y belleza.
Allí se puede llegar caminando a través de caminos, trochas y veredas; o en bicicleta; logrando de esta forma no solo hacer ejercicio, sino disfrutar un paisaje realmente espectacular.
La Laguna Big Pond: Ubicada en el sector de la Loma. Tiene 400 Mts. por 150 Mts de extensión y más de 30 Mts de profundidad. Aunque no es propicia para nadar si es refugio de miles de pájaros, babillas, boas, cangrejos y peces. Palmas y árboles frutales rodean la laguna.
Iglesia Bautista Considerada la primera iglesia Bautista de América; construida en 1847 con maderas traídas de Alabama y con un estilo muy sureño. Por su ubicación (La Loma), sirve de guía a las embarcaciones que llegan a San Andrés. Todos los domingos los nativos se engalanan muy especialmente para asistir a los oficios religiosos que allí se ofician.
Islote Johnny Cay: Un pequeño islote que se divisa desde las playas Spratt Bight. Es paseo obligado para los turistas que desean deleitarse con comidas típicas, cocteles y hermosas playas enmarcadas en palmeras. Allí pueden practicar el buceo y observar hermosa fauna marina y corales; hay que tener cuidado especial en la práctica de este deporte; pues los principiantes pueden pasar un susto debido a sus fuertes corrientes y a los cortantes corales.
Haynes Cay y El Acuario Cayos de origen coralino, con abundantes palmeras. Ambos cayos permiten deleitarse con los colores del mar Sanandresano. Es lugar propicio para que niños y principiantes puedan practicar deportes náuticos.
Los Cayos Lejanos: Los cayos de Roncador, Quitasueño, Alburquerque, Serrana, Serranilla, Bolívar son principalmente faros que guían los barcos que recorren el mar Caribe; también se usan como bases o puestos militares. Son ricos en arrecifes que forman una barrera protectora; por este motivo han sido cementerio de barcos. Son ricos en especies marinas como tortugas, langostas, barracudas, caracoles y tiburones; de igual forma, son refugio de algunas especies de aves. De igual forma, revisten especial interés las diferentes exposiciones en la Casa de la Cultura donde se muestran aspectos relacionados con la cultura, las costumbres y las actividades tradicionales de los isleños.
En la isla de Providencia encontramos:
La Cabeza de Morgan Fue tal la influencia de la invasión del pirata Henry Morgan en el Archipiélago, que la realidad se mezcla con infinidad de leyendas; es el caso de la isla de Santa Catalina donde se encuentra una inmensa roca que semeja una cabeza con perfil humano sobre el mar. Para los nativos es la cabeza de Morgan a la que todos los turistas quieren ver de cerca y tomar fotografías de esta sin igual escultura tallada por las fuertes olas a través del tiempo.
Cayo Cangrejo Este pequeño islote rodeado de aguas transparentes se ubica frente a la isla de Providencia, cerca de la Bahía Ganet; allí acuden los turistas a observar o mejor, deleitarse con el bello paisaje marino. En su parte mas alta hay una gran roca, desde donde se puede divisar la majestuosidad del mar y al cual se puede acceder por una escalera construida por nativos para facilitar el ascenso.
Bahía Agua Dulce Uno de los denominados “Doce caseríos de Providencia”; su atractivo radica en sus hermosas playas y los incomparables servicios de alimentación y alojamiento; esta ubicada en el costado occidental de la Isla y como su nombre lo indica, contiene agua dulce proveniente de los nacimientos existentes en las partes mas altas de las montañas.
El Peak Por su característica montañosa, Providencia es una isla privilegiada; su parte mas elevada es un inmenso farallón, bautizado “EL PEAK”; punto donde nacen la mayoría de la aguas de Providencia. En un futuro se piensa construir allí un jardín botánico y un observatorio astronómico.
South West bay (Bahia Suroeste) Lugar ideal para disfrutar de hermosas y extensas playas; allí se encuentran buenos hoteles y restaurantes; y se puede bucear o alquilar una moto para recorrer la isla.
MC. Bean Lagoon Con una extensión de 995 hectáreas de las cuales 905 son marinas; conformado por un espectacular ecosistema de manglar, junto con una hermosa barrera de arrecifes y una gran laguna con pastos marinos; fue declarado Parque Natural desde 1996.
Three Brothers Cay Este cayo es propicio para la observación de aves migratorias. Dista solo dos kilómetros de la isla de Providencia.
Podríamos concluir diciendo que el Archipiélago de San Andrés, al igual que todas las islas caribeñas, tiene un ambiente informal y la posibilidad de combinar infinidad de actividades como la pesca, los cruceros, los deportes náuticos, el buceo, espectáculos folclóricos, la rumba en discotecas o las noches de reggae, calypso o socca acompañadas de cocteles de ron y coco en la playa, los casinos, restaurantes típicos o internacionales, las compras o hasta eventos internacionales como el “Festival de la Luna Verde” en el mes de abril; y que es toda una muestra de reggae, conciertos y bailes.
San Andrés y Providencia es un viaje que dejará en cada unos de sus visitantes un recuerdo imborrable en su memoria.
